Where can I get milk in glass milk bottles?

Where-can-I-get-milk-in-glass-milk-bottles

When fighting the war on plastic, one of the main ‘pain in the proverbial’ culprits for most non vegan households is milk bottles; it pretty much comes in plastic bottles or plastic cartons but no longer glass milk bottles – thanks very much to Fonterra for that.

However, there are many farmers passionate about getting full whole farm fresh milk to customers in the good ol’ glass bottles many of us may remember from our youth and even more are passionate about enabling us to refill them ourselves. However, these vending machines around the country are generally in rural areas and distributing bottled milk, taking on the big ‘F’ ain’t cheap – so bottled milk that you may have found appears to be a boutique treat.

However, it’s well worth supporting these farmers and not just for their sustainable practices and ethics, but also for many of them, it’s their passion to share with you the beautiful raw milk goodness that they and their families enjoy, straight from the vat everyday.

The enthusiasm for Real Milk has been growing in New Zealand. People love the taste, they love the health benefits, and they love supporting their local farmers.

The health benefits for those who are normally dairy intolerant, have bowel issues, asthma, eczema, need calcium meds, psoriasis, the list goes on are palpable. Raw milk is completely different to supermarket milk. It can have up to twice the amount of protein, it never really goes off (it turns into cheese and whey instead) and is an outstanding source of nutrients including beneficial bacteria, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, essential amino acids and antibodies that strengthen the immune system.

There are 2 enzymes in raw milk in particular which make it unique; Lactoferrin and Lactoperoxidase, these are anti-bacterial and overcome the traces of nasties that can occur in raw milk such as Campylobacter, Listeria, Salmonella and toxin-producing strains of E.coli.

Infact, Fonterra is now extracting Lactoferrin from raw milk (as pasteurisation destroys it) and selling it as an anti-microbial. What???

Why don’t they let us have it in the way nature intended? In the raw wholesome milk straight from the cow? THAT is a conversation worth having!

By law though, all the Raw Milk farmer vendors are required to state the following (and to a large extent, will be reluctant to enter into the political conversation): “Raw milk may contain harmful microorganisms that can cause serious illness, raw milk should be heated to 70 degrees Celsius for at least one minute. This is critical for infants, young children, elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. Store at or below 4 degree Celsius. Do not consume after the use by date.”

Suffice to say though, many dairy farmers are hugely passionate about the merits of raw milk. Personally, I believe our refrigeration, transportation and health and safety regulations are far more superior than they were back in the day when the risks of these nasty bacteria’s breaking out in deadly quantities in raw milk were higher. But that’s just me. That’s a choice and risk that I’ve chosen to make for me and my family.

We’ve been drinking raw milk now for about 6 years or more. I’ve raised my son on it. I never pasteurise it. I make butter, cheese and yogurt with it. We’ve had absolutely zero issues with it, in fact, we’re a pretty darn healthy family (touch wood!). So I endorse raw milk 100% from a personal viewpoint. I encourage you to look into the merits yourself. You may want to start here.

But this article is not about Raw Milk – it’s about hooking you up with more sustainably packaged milk around NZ.

Below are a number, but not all, of milk vendors and stockists who package milk in glass bottles, refillable bottles or sell reusable/refillable pails for milk in New Zealand.

I would love this resource to be updated and kept accurate, with vendors who want to be found by customers wanting to seek fresh milk in glass milk bottles or reusable bottles/pails. So if you know of vendors and stockists who provide this who are not listed here then please contact me so that we can keep this page updated.
